          वर्ण-व्यवस्था (The Caste system)

चार वर्ण एक ही शरीर के विभिन्न अंगों के समान है।वह उसी एक दिव्य शरीर से उत्पन्न हुए हैं- ब्राम्हण मुख से,क्षत्रिय हाथ से,वैश्य जंघा से और शूद्र चरणों से,(वास्तव में इस कथन का गहरा आंतरिक अर्थ है) ज्ञान के सिद्धांतों की जो गुरु की तरह शिक्षा देती है,उसी वाणी का वक्ता ही ब्राह्मण है। शक्तिशाली भुजावाले,जो पृथ्वी का भार उठाए हैं,वे क्षत्रिय हैं। खंभों की तरह जो समाज रूपी भवन को साधे हुए हैं,वे वैश्य हैं। इसीलिए अलंकारिक शब्दों में उनको दिव्य पुरुष की जंघा से उत्पन्न में बताया गया है। हर प्रकार के कार्यों की हलचल में व्यस्त पैरों की तरह शूद्र समाज के बुनियादी कार्य करते हैं। यदि किसी एक भी वर्ण का कार्य ढीला पड़ जाए तो सामाजिक जीवन की शांति व सुख पर उसका बुरा प्रभाव होगा। सभी वर्ण आवश्यक व कीमती है,जैसे शरीर के सब अंग बराबर महत्व के हैं। यहां ना कोई ऊंच है,ना नीच। घृणा और स्पर्धा सामाजिक जीवन के लिए उतने ही हानिकारक हैं जितना कि गुस्से में सब अवयवों का पेट के विरोध में अपना काम बंद कर देना।

मिश्री की बनी गुड़िया पूर्णतया मीठी होती है। सिर तोड़ कर खाओ तो मीठी,पैर तोड़ कर खाओ तो भी उतनी ही मीठी। तब उसी एक दिव्यता से उत्पन्न अवयवों की तरह जो वर्ण हैं उनको ऊंचा या नीचा कैसे घोषित किया जा सकता है? अवयवों में तो भिन्नता है भी लेकिन लाल रक्त सभी में बहता है,सभी को जीवन देता है। हाथ,पैर या मुख के लिए अलग-अलग रक्त नहीं होता। वर्णों का प्रबंध वेदों द्वारा संस्थापित हुआ है,इसलिए यह कभी अन्याय पूर्ण नहीं हो सकता। यह किसी मनुष्य द्वारा आविष्कार की रचना नहीं है। इसलिए जो वर्णों के बारे में अपने अविवेकी आक्षेपों द्वारा ऊंच-नीच की भावना और घृणा उत्पन्न करते हैं वे अज्ञान का ही प्रदर्शन करते हैं।

आध्यात्मिक दृष्टिकोण से इन वर्णों का नाम दूसरी प्रकार से यह भी हो सकता है कि जो ब्रह्म के ध्यान में संलग्न हैं वह ब्राह्मण हैं, असत्य का विरोध करने वाले क्षत्रिय हैं; व्यवस्थित प्रणाली द्वारा जो असत्य का सत्य से विवेचन कर लेते हैं वह वैश्य हैं; जो उद्योगी है और जीवन में सदा सत्य का पालन करते हैं वे शुद्र हैं। मनुष्य के सुख और कल्याण के लिए ऐसी ही वर्ण व्यवस्था का पालन आवश्यक है।
पुनः पूर्व विषय पर आयें। कृष्ण ने अर्जुन से कहा- "मैंने चार वर्णों का निर्माण गुण व कर्म के आधार पर किया है।" यद्यपि जहां तक इनका संबंध है मैं कर्त्ता हूं लेकिन फिर भी मैं अकर्त्ता हूं।

The four castes are like the limbs of the same body. They have evolved out of the same divine body —the brahmins from the face, the warriors from the hands, the businessmen from the thighs, and the labourers from the
feet. Of course, these expressions have a deeper inner meaning. Those who, like the guru, teach the principles of
wisdom are the voice; they are the brahmins. The strong armed bear the burden of the earth; they are the warriors.
The social edifice is upheld, as on pillars, by the businessmen, so they are figuratively described as emanating from the thighs of the divine Person. And, like the feet that are engaged in going about on all kinds of activities, the labourers are ever engaged in the basic tasks of society. The peace and happiness of society will suffer if even
a single caste is slack in its task. All castes are worthwhile and valuable, just as all limbs are important. There is
no higher or lower. Hatred and rivalry in society are as harmful as the stoppage of work by all the limbs in anger
against the stomach!
A sugar doll is sweet all over. Break off its head and eat it; it is sweet. Break off a leg and eat it: it is as sweet as the head. Then how can the castes, which are the limbs of the self-same Divinity, be pronounced higher or lower? Limbs are different, but the very same red blood flows in all and animates all. There is no special variety for the hand or leg or face. The caste system is ordained by the Vedas, so there can be no injustice in it; it is not an artifice invented by people. So those who try to create differences and hatred by their inconsiderate remarks about it are only exhibiting their ignorance.

Really, from a deep spiritual (adi-atmic) point of view, the castes can be characterized in another way: those who are established in the contemplation of Brahman are brahmins; those who oppose untruth are warriors; those who systematically discriminate the true from the false are the business people; those who are ever active and follow truth in everyday life are the labourers. The happiness of humanity can be amply realized only when castes
function in this way. Now we shall revert to the subject. Krishna addressed Arjuna. “The four castes have been created by Me
on the basis of quality (guna) and action (karma). Though I am the doer as far as they are concerned, I am still a
non-doer!
