          वर्ण-व्यवस्था ( The Caste system)

व्यग्रता और अशांति का कारण वर्ण-व्यवस्था नहीं है। दोष तो अनियमित तरीकों का है जिनसे अव्यवस्था बढ़ी है। हर प्रकार के लोगों के हाथ का खिलौना बनने ही के कारण इसकी मौलिक स्वस्थता और शांति खो गई है। विदेशों में भी यह व्यवस्था है। नाम दूसरे हो सकते हैं; लेकिन कार्यप्रणाली एक ही है। वहां भी चार विभाग हैं -
१~शिक्षक वर्ग,
२~रक्षक वर्ग,
३~वाणिज्य वर्ग और
४~श्रमिक वर्ग।
लेकिन भारत में जन्म से वर्ण जाना जाता है। संसार के दूसरे भागों में कर्म से, जो जिस कार्य को करता है उससे माना जाता है। इतना ही अंतर है।
अब ब्राह्मणों में, जिनको कि प्रथम वर्ग की मान्यता है, बहुत से हैं जो निर्धारित मार्ग को छोड़कर निम्न तरीके अपनाते हैं। इसी प्रकार चौथे वर्ण में या शूद्रों में बहुत से ऐसे पाए जाते हैं जिनके विचार पवित्र आदर्शों से प्रेरित हैं, जिनकी श्रेष्ठ अध्यात्मिक आकांक्षाएँ हैं और जो मन की शुद्धि द्वारा सिद्धि चाहते हैं। ऐसी कुछ संभावना मात्र से ही वर्ण-व्यवस्था को मानव समाज के लिए निरर्थक बताना उचित नहीं है।

The caste system is not the cause of all this confusion and unrest. The fault lies more in the haphazard manner
in which it has developed. It became a plaything in the hands of all types of people, so it lost its original symmetry and harmony. This system is essential not merely for India but even for the world. In countries outside India, this system is not absent. The name may be different, but the working is the same. There, there are also four classes:
1. Teacher,
2. Protector,
3. Merchant, and
4. Labourer.
But in India, the castes are decided by birth; in other parts of the world,
they are decided by action (karma), the work in which each is engaged. That is the distinction.
Now, among the brahmins who have been honoured by being established in the very first cadre, many can be
found who have left the path and strayed into mean ways. So too, in the fourth caste, the labourers, many can be
found who are moved by holy ideals and high spiritual aspirations and who are striving to attain purity of mind as a means of realization. Just because these things are possible, it is not proper to conclude that the caste organization of human society is useless.
